General Kanene goes after ‘fake’ promoters

Faces Alleluya Band, Gwaladi

Controversial Zambian musician General Kanene arrived in the country on Wednesday ahead of a series of shows.

The artist is expected to, among other things, share the stage with Balaka-based group Alleluya Band and Joe Gwaladi at Club 24/7, Chileka, Blantyre tomorrow.

The tour starts tonight at Vibes in Zomba before dating Club 24/7 the following day.

Next weekend starting on November 8, General Kanene will perform at Davido in Mangochi, a venue which is slowly becoming popular in the lakeshore district. The venue is tonight expected to host Black Missionaries, Anthony Makondetsa, Khozi Masimbe, Yanjanani Chumbu, Moda Fumulani, Santy and Mlangeni Sounds.

On November 9, General Kanene will perform at Squirrels Park in Mzuzu before moving to Planet Club in Karonga on November 10.

“I am here in Malawi and ready to entertain you in all the shows. I am happy with the contract I have signed and that is why I am here. Let me say it here that there are some fake promoters, who have been putting me on their posters without signing agreements and that is why I have not been part of their shows,” he said yesterday.

The artist added that he does not do his music business on the phone.

“There are others who call me that they want me to come to Malawi for shows but do not give me a proper contract. For me, I respect a contract and that is why I strive to put everything in writing. If there is no proper agreement in writing, then forget [about me showing up],” Kanene said.

He also stressed that he has never shunned a show where there was a proper agreement.

“For all shows I have not attended, it means there was no proper agreement. I would like to ask for forgiveness from Malawians for that and I would like to thank you for supporting my music,” the musician said.

Proprietor of Club 24/7, who has initiated the tour, Macdonald Soko, said General Kanene signed the contract and that they have an agreement, hence his coming.

“We walk the talk. We do things on the ground. People doubted that General Kanene would come but here he is. If you don’t have a proper arrangement, that is where hiccups arise,” Soko said.
