Domestic hockey giants, Genetrix, are taking part in friendly games in Lusaka, Zambia so as to gain international exposure.
Zimbabwean top side, Hippo, are also participating in the tri-nation Zambia Invitational Tournament with the aim of defending the trophy.
Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) General Secretary, Chigo Thindwa, said the trip to Zambia would help raise Genetrix’s playing standards.
“It will also enable us to gauge ourselves against our fellow hockey playing neighbours,” he said.
Thindwa also stated that the game between Genetrix and Hippo was stopped at half time on Friday due to a blackout.
The Ham GS thanked Energem for providing Genetrix with fuel. The team also received support from Riaz Lambat of Quarry Kings, Malawi National Council of Sports and Kips.
Recently, Zambian hockey side, Lusaka Sharks, toured Malawi in November and defeated four Malawian sides in the men’s and ladies’ sections.
The two-day tournament was held at Hockey Stadium (formerly Upper Stadium) near Kamuzu Stadium.
In the men’s category, Sharks won all their four games with Genetrix finishing second.
