Genetrix retain FMB Hockey titles

Genetrix men’s and ladies’ teams have maintained their dominance in the Southern Region after defending their FMB 11-Aside Hockey Championships at the weekend.

Genetrix have won the men’s league with 25 points from 10 matches after winning eight, losing once and drawing once.

Scorpions finished second with 20 points from 10 matches while Nyala Hockey Club have finished the season with 16 points.

Braves have finished fourth with 11 points and they are followed by Changalume on 10 points.

Falcons have finished bottom with three points from 10 matches.

In the ladies’ league, Genetrix have beaten the rest with 25 points from 10 matches followed by Braves on 20 points.

Sports Complex Simba have finished third with 17 points while Nyala Ladies have finished fourth with 13 points.

Scorpions have finished on position five with 11 points while Falcons have finished bottom of the standings after failing to get any point from their 10 matches.

Genetrix coach Geoffrey Biya said he was excited that his club had preserved its top status in both the men’s and ladies’ leagues.

The League’s media officer, Wanthaza Mughogho, said the doubling of sponsorship from K1 million to K2 million this year led to stiff competition.

“Every team seemed determined to win the league this season. No wonder, Genetrix struggled especially in the early matches of the season. We hope that next year we will see more competition,” he said.

Mughogho added that the outstanding players and teams would be rewarded during a special prize presentation ceremony to be held soon.

Some of the outstanding players from the league would be included in the Under-21 national team that would be established soon.
