Father to late Geoffrey Mwale has finally instructed lawyer John Gift Mwakhwawa to file lawsuits against Malawi Defence Force, Fam, Sulom and Red Lions.

Following violence that occurred at Kamuzu Stadium on May 10, Geoffrey Mwale sustained head injuries and died on June 5 before being laid to rest on June 6.

The victim’s father, Senior Superintendent Stanley Mwale, said it was high time that the law reigned supreme in the country.

“It is true I am filing a lawsuit against the four institutions. However, I will not comment further because the issue is in the hands of my lawyer John Gift Mwakhwawa,” he said.

Mwakhwawa confirmed being instructed by Mwale to take legal action against the four.

“It is true that my client has instructed me to file a complaint. It’s too early to comment further,” he said.

Geoffrey Mwale was allegedly assaulted by Malawi Defence Force soldiers during the violence that erupted at Kamuzu Stadium following Red Lions’ 2-2 draw against Surestream (now Fisd Wizards) on May 10.

Lions were fined K3.4 million and eight of its players banned from six to eight months.

The violence started right on the pitch as Lions players surrounded and battered the referee after awarding Wizards (then Surestream) a second penalty, and later a brawl with supporters ensued.

According to reports, Geoffrey Mwale, who was 24, did not even attend the match, but as the violence at the stadium spread to the Kamuzu Highway, innocent people were attacked among them the late Mwale who was waiting for a car to pick him up.
