Gerald Chiunda, 3 others still in police custody

Suspended Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) Executive Director Gerald Chiunda has spent a second night in Zomba Police Station (ZPS) custody.

On Tuesday, Chiunda confirmed to The Daily Times that he had been arrested after Eastern Region Police officers invited him to ZPS, where they ended up throwing him in the cooler.

However, National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera professed ignorance on the issue. Wednesday, he came out in the open to confirm that the suspended Maneb boss was in police custody, further saying Chiunda had been arrested alongside three other Maneb officials.

The three are the board’s head of security Owen Khutho, chief examinations development officer and chief examinations security officer Ishmael Faki and Joseph Njilombe, respectively.

“The four have been charged in line with the Maneb Act. They were arrested on allegations that they failed to exercise due care and attention in relation to the security of national examination materials,” Kadadzera said.

He added that the four also failed to take reasonable steps to enhance security for Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations materials.

“The four will appear in a court of law to answer their charges once we finish our investigations and paperwork. Currently, they are in our custody at Zomba Police Station,” Kadadzera said.
