Gerald Phiri breeding more Tigers

By Mphatso Malidadi:

New Mighty Tigers Coach, Gerald Phiri Snr, is this week expected to name a 40-member provisional squad as he continues rebuilding for the new season.

Tigers lose most of their best players to big teams every season as they do not have the financial muscle to keep them.

Two of the team’s top stars, Luke Chima and Peter Kasonga, were signed by Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers, respectively, in the current transfer window.

In a bid to replace the two, Tigers invited over 100 players for trials, with 80 getting dropped whereas 20 remained.

“It has not been an easy exercise. We had a lot of players and we needed to be careful when assessing them to avoid missing out on good talent.

“As of now, we have 40 players including 20 newcomers who are undergoing trials. From this number, we will pick 25 players who will feature in our plans and then assess the remaining 15 to see if we can sign more,” he said.

Phiri is confident that the crop of players at his disposal can compete for the league championship and national trophies.

“I have a personal target and I am working towards it. Most of my players do not have names in the game but we will turn Tigers into a force to reckon with in the 2019 season,” Phiri said.

The former Malawi national football team assistant coach returned to Tigers last month after a two-year absence.

Tigers can boast of having groomed some of the country’s best players such as Yamikani Chester, Stanley Sanudi, Ernest Kakhobwe, William Thole, Peter Cholopi and Nenani Juwaya.
