HUNTING FOR
CLUB—Phiri Jnr

Malawi national football team star, Gerald Phiri Jnr, is confident of securing a deal with another team after leaving South Africa First Division side, Ajax Cape Town.

The former Be Forward Wanderers midfielder has been in good form for Malawi at the on-going Cosafa Cup in South Africa, where he has scored two goals.

Phiri captained the Flames during their 1-1 draw with Mozambique on Thursday as he made his first start at this year’s competition.

The lanky Phiri helped Malawi get their campaign off to a flying start with a classic goal in their 3-0 win against Seychelles before grabbing the winning goal in the 2-1 triumph over Namibia.

The two results were enough to see Malawi through to the last eight. Phiri said he is pleased with his form at the regional tournament and hopes to attract the attention of big clubs.

“My agent is in Poland watching the Fifa under-20 World Cup and, when he returns, we will sit down and see what is best for us,” he said.

Phiri, who joined former South Africa Premier Soccer League champions Bidvest Wits from Zimbabwe’s Caps United and was on loan at Ajax, said he was impressed with the Flames’ performance in the group stages.

“We are a good squad. The coach made changes against Mozambique but the team still delivered. This simply means that every player in our squad can play and help the team to win. We just need to continue working hard in all our games to get good results,” he said ahead of Sunday’s quarterfinal match against Zambia.
