Flames midfielder Gerald Phiri Junior has left South Africa National First Division side Ajax Cape Town at the end of his loan spell from Bidvest Wits.
Phiri confirmed Wednesday that he was done with Ajax and that he was weighing up options.
“Yes, I left Ajax but I am a free agent now,” said the winger who signed a three-year contract with Wits in 2015 from Zimbabwe’s Caps United.
Phiri, a set-piece specialist, is now focusing on the Flames’ Cosafa Cup campaign after making interim coach Meke Mwase’s squad.
The future of Gabadinho Mhango is also uncertain at Wits amid reports linking him with a switch to Kaizer Chiefs when his contract ends on June 30.
Ajax have released Phiri alongside 11 other players after failing to earn Premier Soccer League promotion, having finished on fourth position in the just ended season.
With their contracts having ended, Ajax have decided against renewing deals for Prince Nxumalo and Brandon Petersen, who are believed to have signed pre-contracts at Wits.
Ajax Head of Football, Hans Vonk, said other players who have been released are Tashreeq Morris, Sirgio Kammies, Sibusiso Khumalo, Thamsanqa Teyise, Raymond Monama, Shu-aib Walters, Frederick Djedje, Guy-Stephane Bedi while Harold Majadibodu has rejoined Mamelodi Sundowns.
