Malawi National Football Team midfielder Gerald Phiri Junior was on the scoresheet as Sudanese giants Al Hilal thrashed Alamal Atbara 5-0 in the Sudan Premier League at Al Hilal Stadium in Omdurman on Wednesday night.

The beautiful goal came from a free kick, with Phiri Junior firing a powerful shot which flew over Atbara’s human wall into the net.

The goal served as a stark reminder to Al Hilal fans of the Malawian’s quality after a lengthy injury lay-off.

In an interview from Sudan, the Flames star said the goal was a morale booster.

’’It is always good to score and help the team collect three points. The team really played well and I am happy,’’ he said.

This could also be good news for Malawi as the midfielder is expected to be part of the squad to face Egypt in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers this month end.

Flames coach Mario Marinica is hoping that the majority of his foreign country-based stars will be fit for the match, having struggled for game time at their respective clubs.

Marinica recently said it was a concern that the majority of his players are not match fit.

“We advised the players to do a lot of work in the gym with the hope of getting back into the first eleven soon,” Marinica said.

Flames attacker Peter Banda was also on the bench for his Tanzanian side Simba SC over the weekend.

However, the story is different for Yamikani Chester, Chikoti Chirwa, Llyod Njaliwa and Richard Mbulu, who are reported to have made an instant impact at Costa do Sol in Mozambique.
