South Africa-based Flames’ midfielder, Gerald Phiri junior, has been appointed as the 2018 Carlsberg Cup brand ambassador, sponsor, Castel Malawi Limited Managing Director, Gilles Leclerc, announced yesterday.
“We have chosen Phiri because he is a product of Carlsberg Cup and based on his good personality and exploits in the game,” Leclerc said during the re-launch ceremony for the cup at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township in Blantyre yesterday.
He then pledged continued sponsorship of the cup, which remains pegged at K40 million, despite the change in management at their company from Carlsberg Malawi Limited.
“Castel Malawi Limited will roll out the Carlsberg Cup 2018 edition as one of the initiatives to celebrate 50 years of Carlsberg brand in Malawi.
“As a good corporate citizen, we feel duty-bound to support the government in football development and contribute to the enhancement of socio-economic fabric of the country through various sponsorships,” Leclerc said.
Speaking on his son’s behalf, Gerald Phiri Senior, said: “We are very thankful for the recognition. I am hope that Phiri junior will motivate others players to work hard in this tournament.”
In his remarks, Football Association of Malawi president, Walter Nyamilandu, warned teams that would take part in the tournament to observe fair-play.
“The contribution that Carlsberg Cup has made to the development of football, over these years, cannot be over-emphasised. Over the years, we have seen many players being identified through Carlsberg Cup.
The cup will see 16 Super League teams being seeded while paving the way for regional teams to battle it out for top-32 slots. Nyasa Big Bullets won the cup last year.
