Malawi’s Flames star, Gerald Phiri Junior, gave South Africa’s Absa Premiership team, Platinum Stars, hope of surviving relegation after guiding them to a 2-0 win over Polokwane City at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.
Phiri came off the bench in the 75th minute and created the first goal by Bongie Ntuli, before scoring the second that handed Stars their first win of the second-round.
It was Phiri’s second goal since rejoining the bottom-placed Stars on loan from parent club, Bidvest Wits.
Phiri has, this season, scored three goals, including the one he netted while with Wits.
South Africa website www. sports24.co.za reports that the former Be Forward Wanderers midfielder proved his worth when he played a free-kick which Ntuli headed into the net.
Phiri then coolly slotted home the second goal to help Stars snap a 10-game winless streak.
Stars lie bottom of the league’s log table with 21 points from 26 games, three points behind Ajax Cape Town.
Recently, Phiri and his teammate Robert Ng’ambi excused themselves from the Flames’ away friendly in Uganda so as to concentrate on saving Stars from relegation.
