Gerald Phiri Senior gets started at Blue Eagles

Newly appointed Blue Eagles Coach Gerald Phiri Snr has said the policemen have a squad capable of turning the tables after a poor start to the 2020/21 TNM Super League.

Phiri was appointed to the hot seat last weekend, replacing De Klerk Msakakuona who is now Malawi National Under-17 Football team coach.

The former Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers mentor conducted his first training session at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe on Tuesday.

Phiri said Eagles had the arsenal to win silverware every season.

“We have to bring back the winning mentality, starting with our weekend matches. I have started working with the team and I am very impressed with the players’ response.

“Eagles is a team with quality players and it is unfortunate that they did not do well at the beginning of the season,” Phiri said.

Should the top flight league games continue this weekend, Phiri’s first assignment will be against Moyale on Saturday at Mzuzu Stadium.

He will then lead his charges against Mzuzu Warriors at the same venue the following day.

Eagles Captain Micium Mhone has described Phiri’s training sessions as tough and exciting.

Mhone said he was humbled to be part of the squad being trained by one of the country’s top coaches.

“Gerald Phiri is a coach with vast experience after training big teams such as Bullets and Wanderers. We are new to him and he is new to us. So we are learning a lot from him.

“It was exciting for us to go through his tough sessions. All in all, we are set as players to work under him. We believe Eagles will be a great team under him,” Mhone said.

Eagles lost their last game 2-1 to TN Stars at Kasungu Stadium on Sunday to remain 11th on the standings, with five points from five matches.
