Gift of the Givers Foundation has committed continued support to the Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi Chapter in order to ensure free flow of information for national development
Last Saturday, the Foundation sponsored four categories of media awards as part of activities to mark this year’s commemoration of World Press Freedom Day at The Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe.
The Foundation gave out prizes and trophies worth K1.7 million to the best photojournalist of the year, best Chichewa (print) journalist of the year, Chichewa (electronic) journalist of the year and Overall Winner who came from different media houses including Times Group, Zodiak Broadcasting Station and Nation Publications Limited.
Chairperson of the Gift of the Givers Foundation, Gaffar Jakhura, observed that his organisation has for the past 10 years been in partnership with Misa Malawi to celebrate contributions that the media has made towards national development.
“As Gift of the Givers, we believe in the spirit of sharing. But we cannot reach out to some members of the society if the media does not report about some community needs. The media also plays an important role in mobilising our citizens to move Malawi forward,” Jakhura said in an interview.
Gift of the Givers Foundation is a humanitarian organisation that has been assisting Malawians in areas that include water and sanitation, agriculture and education. It aims to help Malawians realise and exploit their potential so that they can live dignified lives.
