Gift of the Givers supports farmers
Gift of the Givers has provided input packs to 600 farmers in six districts in Malawi to enable them grow maize and other food crops through winter cropping.
Launching the exercise in Mangochi on Wednesday, Gift of the Givers Malawi chairman Gaffar Jakhura said the programme is aimed at supporting families which have been heavily affected by dry spells in Mangochi, Zomba, Balaka, Mwanza, Blantyre and Chiradzulu districts.
Jakhura said the foundation believes that the best way of assisting poor families is by empowering them economically so that they can have the capacity to produce their own food.
“The farm inputs will enable them be food secure as a long term measure of improving their social economic status,” he said.
The packs each comprise 10 kilogrammes of Urea and NPK fertiliser and two kilogrammes each of beans and maize seed.
The programme, being implemented at a cost of K12 million, will also see another 1,200 families being provided with relief food items comprising of maize flour and 10 packets of soya pieces relish.
One of the beneficiaries Amina M’bwana, hailed the donation saying it has come at a right time considering that the farmers were desperate as to how they make their families food secure especially with the failure of rain fed agriculture.
