About 200 farmers in Mangochi are set to receive Farmer Packs worth K3.2 million for winter cropping from Gift of the Givers Foundation as part of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) Celebrations to take place in the district on May 7, 2016.

Gift of the Givers Foundation will also partner the Media Institute of Southern Africa – Malawi Chapter (Misa-Malawi) to support 200 patients at two health facilities in the district with Sibusiso Ready Food Supplement worth K500,000.

In addition, Gift of the Givers will sponsor four categories in the Misa- Malawi WPFD awards during the Gala Night to be held in the evening of the same day to the tune of K1.1 million.

Announcing the support in Blantyre on Friday, Gift of the Givers Malawi Chairperson Gaffar Jakhura said apart from reviewing and celebrating the performance and achievements of the media in the year gone by, the World Press Freedom Day also offers an opportunity to journalists to reflect and interact on the role of the media in the social and economic development of their country.

He said Gift of the Givers has for the past seven years partnered Misa-Malawi to include social responsibility as part of the celebrations.

Jakhura said there is a need for the media to highlight the plight of HIV and Aids patients in the country in terms of what they lack and need.

“Obviously, dissemination of such information would encourage other like-minded philanthropists to respond positively towards assisting our people to live positively and have a comfortable life to look forward to,” said Jakhura.

He said the Farmer Packs will also support subsistent farmers to undertake winter cropping so as to have adequate food a few months down the road.
