The Global Fund (GF) has, through the Ministry of Health, donated a consignment of personal protective equipment (PPE) worth K300 million to the Ministry of Homeland Security to help it address Covid-related challenges.
Health Minister Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda handed over the items to Homeland Security Minister Jean Sendeza at Maula prison in Lilongwe Wednesday.
Kandodo Chiponda said Covid had not spared prisons in the country.
“It is the duty of the government to protect every citizen from the pandemic and inmates are among the people we want to protect,” she said.
Sendeza said PPE would be distributed in prisons across the country.
“The equipment will be used by inmates and prison officers. There is a great need for PPE in prisons and the items will help us fight the pandemic,” she said.
Chief Commissioner of Prisons Wandika Phiri hailed GF for reaching out to them saying overcrowding in prisons puts inmates at risk of contracting coronavirus.
“Maula Prison alone has over 14,500 inmates against the required capacity of about 7,000 inmates,” she said.
As at now, Maula Prison has one coronavirus case, with the individual being put in isolation to avoid the further spread of the novel coronavirus.
