Goals elude Super League strikers
It’s either strikers are getting lazy or goalkeepers have perfected their skills tremendously this season because after three weeks of action, the goals are not coming as expected in the TNM Super League.
Twenty-four games have now been played this far in the elite league with 59 goals scored. Last season, 73 goals were scored after three weeks of Super League action.
The first week of the 2014 season produced 25 goals, then 25 more goals followed in second week and 23 goals scored in third week.
However, Super League of Malawi general secretary, Williams Banda, said interpretation of the statistics could vary.
“It’s either teams have improved and hence it’s becoming tough to get goals,” he said.
“Or it could be that the league is yet to pick up momentum hence no goals coming.”
He, however, said it was too early to start making judgments based on 24 games played so far.
“Let’s wait and see how things will turn out,” he said. “I think 24 games are not enough to start speculating.”
The league’s first hat-trick was scored by Blue Eagle’s John Malidadi Junior in the first week.
So far, he is the only player to achieve this feat and leads the top scorers chart with four goals alongside Innocent Bokosi.
Civo are yet to score a goal in three games. After 270 minutes none of the players at Civo is good enough to hit the back of the net.
But Azam Tigers have so far been the most impressive side after managing to collect six points from a possible nine on the road.
Leaders Mafco, with nine points from three games, have collected these points at their backyard.
It’s no surprise they lead the pack after conceding a single goal.
Red Lions, Blue Eagles, Big Bullets, Be Forward Wanderers and Azam Tigers, all have seven points separated only by goal difference with the latter having played a game more.
Discipline has also been a problem for some clubs.
Just three weeks into the season, four red cards have been splashed with the Nomads being the worst culprits with two consecutive red cards and one each for Airborne Rangers and Red Lions.
Rookies Surestream FC remain pointless after three games.
They also have the most porous defence after conceding eight goals.
