Godfrey Chapola appointed Tobacco Commission Board Chair

Government has appointed Godfrey Chapola as Tobacco Commission (TC) Board Chairperson.
Chapola replaces Harry Mkandawire, who was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense in February this year.
According to communication from Comptroller of Statutory Corporations Peter Simbani, the appointment is with effect from April 19.
“The tenure of office for Dr. Chapola shall therefore expire together with that of the current board members on 22nd September 2023,” the communication reads.
Chapola once served as the commission’s general manager a decade ago and was running mate for UDF president Atupele Muluzi during the 2014 presidential election.
According to available information, Chapola has extensive experience in agriculture in Malawi having worked for the Agricultural Research and External Trust, Tobacco Research Institute of Malawi and the Tobacco Research Authority, among others.
The information further shows that Chapola holds a PhD in Agriculture, Master of Science in Agriculture and Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.
