Golf courses worry golfer

A domestic top golfer is concerned with the condition of most golf courses, saying they are not conducive to the growth of the gentleman’s sport.

John-Gift Mwakhwawa, the winner of Airtel Broadband Golf Tournament’s men category at Kasasa Golf Club in Dwangwa on Saturday, cited a Blantyre course as being dry, especially in summer.

“The Blantyre course where I come from is very dry. I understand it is because of the dry season, but they need to be rehabilitated as I find it hard to strike balls,” Mwakhwawa said.

During the Dwangwa event, Mwakhwawa won the male’s category with 40 points, beating 48 competitors to receive an iPhone 5s, K20,000 worth of airtime and a Titleist Golf Bag.

Cath McComb of Kasungu Golf Club won the six-member ladies’ category with 41 points to receive an iPhone 5s, K20, 000 worth of airtime and a tailor-made bag.

Airtel Malawi’s Business Enterprise Director, Rachel Mijiga, said the company supports golf clubs financially but the money is misused.

“After every tournament, the company makes financial contributions to clubs for the maintainance of courses. But you will find that the owners are directing the funds towards other things,” Mijiga explained.

She added that company will consider donating equipment to golf clubs instead of cash.

Officials for Blantyre clubs, which were contacted, had not responded to a questionnaire, but Mzuzu Golf Club supervisor, Bonwell Manda, said they generate their own funds for the maintenance of the golf course.

“The biggest problem with our golf course is that it is situated in between residential areas [of Masasa and Hilltop], so it is a pathway for people living in these areas. A golf course is supposed to be free from that. Some have also turned it into a driving school route,” Manda said, adding that they will dig a pit around the course to prevent passers-by.
