Golfers donate to Lilongwe orphanage
Shankers, a grouping of Lilongwe Golf Club golfers, over the weekend donated assorted items to Samalani Childhood Development Centre in the Capital City.
The donation, worth an estimated K500,000, included soap, sugar, maize flour, salt, exercise books and writing materials.
Shankers also pledged to pay water bills for the centre amounting to K150,000. Water was disconnection at the centre two years ago.
Spokesperson for the golfers, Chris Mpanga, said the donation was in line with the group’s core value of complementing government’s efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the less-privileged.
“We thought of this as we looked at the hygiene of the premises and the water bills they were incurring in buying water from the surrounding communities’ water kiosks,” Mpanga said.
“This will go a long way in having a healthy and conducive environment at the school but also making sure that the school has clean and safe water.”
He added: “The future of this country lies in the hands of these kids and we need to nurture them from a young age into healthy citizens.”
In his remarks, Samalani Centre Executive Director, Samson Chaziya, hailed the golfers for the donation.
“Words would fail to express my feeling. We are really thankful to Shankers and we would like to encourage others to emulate the gesture,” Chaziya said.
One of the students from the school has been selected to Mzuzu University after scoring 20 points and he needs assistance.
