Minister of Information, Gospel Kazako, has indicated that as he embarks on restructuring the tax-funded national broadcaster, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), there will be casualties saying those trying to frustrate the process will not be tolerated.

The minister made the remarks Wednesday when he visited MBC offices in Blantyre where he addressed members of staff assuring them that the process will be done on merit.

Kazako said MBC has not been serving the interests of Malawians, but time has come for the staff members to prove that they can do better.

“When Malawians expected you to fight hunger, you were hunger yourself, when they wanted you fight Covid-19, you were Covid-19 yourself and when they wanted you to preach peace, you perpetuated violence,” Kazako told the MBC staff members who were led by the corporation’s Director General, Aubrey Sumbuleta.

He, however, explained that the process is not meant to eliminate workers who are affiliated to the Democratic Progressive Party, but rather to sanitize MBC using merit.

According to the minister, the same process will extend to other institutions including Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority and Malawi Post Corporations.

He has therefore called for every Malawian including those who lost in the elections to embrace unity and join in building the new Malawi for everyone.

The minister also promised that government will soon operationalise the access to information bill as the current administration has nothing to hide.

In his remarks, Sumbuleta, acknowledged that there are some areas that the broadcaster has not done well while under his leadership.

“Realistically I think as a professional, there are areas that we have done well, and there are areas that we have not done well, and that is a point of reflection that the honorable minister referred to.

“We will be going back to the drawing board to look at where we did well and where we didn’t do well and not to repeat the same mistakes that we have done,” he said.

He says the minister has given them a clear direction under the new government so that there should be a change and function as a public broadcaster.

There has been a public outcry on how the public broadcaster has been operating in which it was deemed to be favoring the then governing DPP party and carried out propaganda against the opposition party.
