Government audits top civil servants

MVULA— Government would want to root out bad elements

The government has released a notice to heads of departments ordering that all government officers from grade P4 and above should immediately submit staff returns.

According to a memo from the Ministry of Agriculture which we have seen, the exercise was supposed to be completed by yesterday July 2.

In the memo, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture writes to all Directors and heads of Departments in the ministry to immediately submit staff returns.

“In view of the on goings that all directors and programs managers are being requested to ensure that update staff returns are submitted with a covering letter by the end of business Thursday July 2, submission should be made to Gertrude Galunzanga,” reads part of the Memo

Political analyst Humphreys Mvula commended the government and said it is important to clean up the civil service as it has been infiltrated by ghost workers and people who got jobs for their tribal or political affiliation.

“The fact that the exercise targets those who are political appointees shows that the [Lazarus] Chakwera-led government would want to root out bad elements,” Mvula said. Chief Secretary in the Office of President and Cabinet was not immediately available for comment.
