Government challenges ICT service providers

Minister of Information Patricia Kaliati, has urged information and communications technology (ICT) service providers in the country to be innovative so that the service should be available across the country.

Kaliati made the appeal on Friday in Lilongwe during the opening of ICT for Development Conference.

“The penetration of internet in the country is at lower percentage. As the government, we are doing all we can to improve the situation. For example, we have rolled out fibre cable connecting in seven districts, which reaches as far as Zambia. There are also plans to roll out another from Tanzania to the remaining districts of the country,” she said.

Kaliati said what is remaining is to bring the service to people.

“I therefore would like to encourage all players in this sector to be more innovative and offer services even to those in the rural areas,” Kaliati said.

President of the ICT Association of Malawi (Ictam), Wisely Phiri, said the meeting was important as it would help in addressing challenges the sector is facing.

“We will see where it is going wrong. If it is to do with the government, let’s go to the government, we will ask it to act accordingly, and it is to do with ourselves, let’s come together and brainstorm,” Phiri said.
