Reports have emerged that government has ordered the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services and National Intelligence Bureau to bar the radical leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party Julius Malema and outspoken Zambia opposition leader Saviour Chishimba from entering Malawi.
The two were invited to attend the Transformation Alliance (TA) conference starting today in Blantyre and the development has forced Chishimba, who confirmed attendance, to cancel his trip at the eleventh hour.
TA spokesperson Leonard Chimbanga confirmed the prohibition of the two in an interview yesterday.
Chimbanga said Chishimba communicated to him that he was served with a letter of prohibition at an airport in Zambia’s capital Lusaka.
“I can confirm Chishimba and Malema are no longer coming to attend the meeting as they have been barred by Malawi government,” he said.
A purportedly Facebook page of Chishimba also quoted him as saying he was not coming to Malawi for security reasons.
On the page, Chishimba accuses Malawi and Zambia governments of colluding in terms of corruption and all sorts of bad governance.
But Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Grace Chiumia, disowned the letter that pronounced prohibition of the two vocal political leaders in their respective countries.
“Does the letter have a logo from Malawi Government? It is not coming from me. Those people have forged my signature. The police have already started investigating the origin of that letter,” Chiumia said.
In the letter in question, the minister is writing Immigration Director General [Masauko]Medi, the National Intelligence Bureau Chief [Elvis] Thodi and South African Airways on the prohibition.
The letter is informing the authorities to take note that in exercise of powers conferred to the minister by Section 4 subsection (1)(h) of Immigration Act she is declaring the two prohibited immigrants and should be refused entry
“Please take note that in the exercise of powers conferred by Section 4 (I) h of Immigration Act, I declare the following persons to be prohibited immigration entry to Malawi, I here put full names of the persons and their particulars available, Saviour Chishimba and Julius Malema. You are therefore directed to use the appropriate notices to be prepared and disseminated to them and relevant officers in order to restrict or refuse their entry in Malawi,” reads the letter circulating on social media.
Four days ago, the management of College of Medicine in Blantyre also cancelled TA’s booking of the college’s Complex for the conference forcing the pressure group to seek refuge at Catholic Church’s St.Pius Hall.
