The Presidential Taskforce on Covid Thursday announced the extension of the temporary closure of schools for two more weeks.

The schools were initially slated to open on Monday.

Co-chairperson of the taskforce Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda said all schools would remain closed as the burden of the pandemic remains high.

“We will do the assessment again after two weeks to see if the burden has gone down so that we should send back to school our kids,” she said.

President Lazarus Chakwera ordered, on January 17 2021, the temporary closure of schools for three weeks as one of the strategies for curbing the spread of coronavirus following an upsurge of cases in January 2021.

Education Minister Agnes NyaLonje also reported that a good number of institutions of higher learning had been hit hard by coronavirus, with students and lecturers being equally impacted.
