Government lifts slaughter ban

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has lifted the animal slaughter ban imposed on Ntcheu and Dedza https://www.times.mw/foot-and-mouth-spreads-to-dedza-ntcheu/districts after the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Director, Patrick Chikungwa, has confirmed the development, saying officials have “successfully” contained the outbreak in the two districts.
“The ministry shall continue to monitor the situation on the ground,” Chikungwa said.
This is further cemented in a statement the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development and Ntcheu District Commissioner Smart Gwedemula released on October 10.
The statement indicates that, despite lifting the ban, the department would continue to employ measures aimed at preventing further outbreaks.
In May this year, t h e government restricted movement of livestock after foot-and-mouth disease broke out in Ntcheu, Blantyre, Dedza and Neno districts.
