Vice-President Saulos Chilima has said government would help the Malawi National Football Team to realise their mission to successfully compete at Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon next year.
Chilima made the remarks after he teed off ‘Kuipatsa Moto’ Flames Fundraising Golf Tournament at Lilongwe Golf Club yesterday.
Chilima teed off at exactly 8 o’clock in the morning.
After the event, Chilima hailed Football Association of Malawi (Fam) for mobilising funds for the Flames.
“As government, we are proud with what Flames did by qualifying for Afcon finals. By taking part in this tournament, we want to show them that we are with them to ensure that Flames have enough resources,” Chilima said.
Minister of Finance Felix Mlusu also participated in the tournament.
Fam president Walter Nyamilandu said the association was overwhelmed by the response from government and the corporate world.
“We are excited that the Vice-President took part in the event. We are hopeful that we will raise enough resources for the team,” Nyamilandu said.
Fam organised the golf tournament to raise funds for Flames to participate at Afcon finals and also 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifiers.
Fam has raised K73 million through the tournament.
The Flames are in Group B of Afcon finals alongside Senegal, Guinea and Zimbabwe.
