The deployment of former Chief Executive Officer for Blantyre City Council (BCC) Ted Nandolo to Malawi Gaming Board still remains a liability to the government as it still pays the perks he was getting when he was at BCC.
Government suspended Nandolo early last year allegedly for exercising ministerial powers in discharging some of his duties.
It is not clear how this case concluded but government has since redeployed Nandolo to Malawi Gaming Board as a director.
However, he is receiving his perks from Blantyre City Council. During his suspension, Director of Administration Alfred Chanza was appointed Acting CEO and later confirmed CEO in March this year. This means that government is now paying benefits to two CEOs.
In an interview, Nandolo confirmed the redeployment to Malawi Gaming Board and the drawing of his benefits from Blantyre City Council.
He refused to be drawn into further questions.
His contract ends next year.
When asked to explain the cost of the decision by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, spokesperson for the ministry Muhlabase Mughogho referred the question to the Office of the President and Cabinet.
She said: “You may wish to recall that the issue of Mr Ted Nandolo was handled by OPC. As such issues concerning Mr Nandolo can properly be responded to by OPC. At this moment this Ministry cannot comment on the affairs of Mr Nandolo.”
Chief Secretary to the Government George Mkondiwa said government spokesperson Malison Ndau was better placed to comment.
Ndau did not pick his phone.
