Government secures K4.2 billion for malaria prevention

MALANGO—We are not selling now

By Yohane Symon:

The government has secured about K4.2 billion from the Global Fund meant for Indoor Residual Spray (IRS) for Malaria Prevention in Mangochi District.

Ministry of Health spokesperson, Joshua Malango, said the exercise would be conducted between October and November, with the possibility of extending it to Nkhotakota District once a partner has been identified.

“We are making final preparations for the exercise, which is expected to start in October and end in November. Mangochi has been chosen because it is one of the districts with the highest malaria prevalence rates in the country,” Malango said.

Malango said the exercise would target approximately 1.2 million people.

Meanwhile, Mangochi District Environmental Health Officer, Kondwani Mamba, has said they are ready for the exercise.

“We have put in place measures to any misconceptions, such as that IRS for malaria prevention may lead to sterility in men,” he said

Ministry of Health statistics indicate that 6 million cases of malaria are registered in Malawi every year.

According to a recent Health Management Information System report, malaria accounts for about 34 percent of all outpatient visits and 18 percent of all hospital deaths across the country.
