By Audrey Kapalamula:

The government is struggling to recover over K590 million from timber loggers that harvested in Viphya Plantation from 2012.

Ministry of Natural Resources spokesperson, Sangwani Phiri, said in an interview that, so far, only Timber Millers Union has shown interest in repaying the debt.

Over 37 timber loggers owe the government millions for harvesting in Viphya Plantation.

“Those who have been reluctant to pay were handed over to the Ministry of Justice [for the ministry] to work on that case.

“Otherwise, one particular company, now reformed Timber Millers Union, has managed to start paying K9 million per month till… three months [ago] after they asked for a breather,” he said.

The department in 2017 submitted a list of all debtors to the Office of AG for action.
