Government to purchase 120 police vehicles

The Ministry of Finance has approved the release of funds that will see the Malawi Police Service being capacitated with 120 vehicles.
Homeland Security Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda told Parliament on Thursday that the vehicles would ease mobility challenges law enforcers face.
“As I speak, the process is at the PPDA [Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority] trying to get these vehicles on the road as soon as possible so that we ease the challenges that are there,” he said.
The minister also said vehicle shortage negatively impacts police operations.
Chimwendo Banda indicated that the ministry asked for 300 vehicles but the Treasury authorised the purchase of 120 vehicles.
He further admitted that most police posts and stations were in dilapidated state.
Salima South legislator Christopher Manja asked the ministry to rehabilitate police structures in his area.
