Government tough on office abuse

KALIATI— Stop using power to manipulate women

Gender Minister Patricia Kaliati has said the government will crack the whip on male managers that force themselves on female employees.

Speaking on Friday, when State-run Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) launched its Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy in Blantyre, Kaliati said it was worrying that cases of office abuse were on the rise in the country.

“Men in managerial positions should stop using their power to manipulate women and sexually harass them,” she said.

MBC Board Chairperson Reverend Vasco Kachipapa concurred with the minister, and vowed to take to book any MBC manager found harassing women employees.

He added that MBC had put in place clear plans to ensure that the policy was executed.

“There are committees that have been put in place. All employees have been given a copy [of the policy] to read and understand. The committees, which have been put in place in all regions of the country where MBC has its offices, will ensure that the policy is being followed,” he said.

The policy seeks to, among other objectives, bring to an end cases where female employees are promoted after satisfying male bosses’ sexual demands.
