Government under fire over delayed projects

Stakeholders have bemoaned delays in constructing learning and transport infrastructure that got Parliament’s nod.
The projects include construction of the Lubinga-Zolozolo-Technical College- Matete-Nkhata Bay Road after members of Parliament approved the budget allocation of K2 billion.
Mzuzu City Member of Parliament (MP), Leonard Njikho, is one of the people who are surprised with the development.
“The city council has finalised all the paper work, including finding a contractor who will construct the road but, up to now, we don’t even know when construction works would start. Now the financial year is coming to an end.
“There are several projects we approved in Parliament but are not taking off. We are looking forward to the construction of a youth centre, civic offices, Mzuzu District Hospital and Mzuzu stadium. Funds for all these projects were approved but there is little commitment from the government,” he said.

Minister of Information, who is also government spokesperson, Henry Mussa, could not be reached for a comment but, former government spokesperson, Nicholas Dausi, is on record to have said the government has the welfare of people in the Northern Region at heart.
He cited completion of projects such as Mzuzu- Nkhata Bay Road, Mzuzu dual carriage way, and Nkhata Bay District Hospital, among others.
Commenting on progress of the relocation of Mzuzu Airport to Lusangazi, Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe is on record to have said funds are available.
Gondwe said what remains is for the ministry responsible to finalise the list of people, at Lusangazi, who are supposed to be compensated.
