Nchalo-based golfer, Archie Graham and Rosa Mbilizi of Blantyre on Saturday emerged Total Malawi golf champions in the men’s and ladies’ categories, respectively.

The two golfers scored 34 points each during the tournament played at Nchalo Golf Club in Chikwawa District, where 70 golfers were in action.

For emerging the winner in the men’s category, Graham received a trophy and a return air ticket to South Africa, whereas Mbilizi won a trophy and two nights for two full-board at Nkopola Lodge.

Graham, with handcap 24, described the tournament as tough, saying he won because of his impressive performance in some holes.

“I was outstanding in holes eighth, 10th and 11th where I had a double strike and I used them to my advantage to amass 34 points,” he said.

James Chimwaza came second while Fukani Gani finished on third position, but both got 33 points. Chimwaza will spend a night with two, full-board at Kuchawe Inn, while Gani won a family meal once a week for three weeks at Steers and Debonair.

Winner in the ladies’ category, Mbilizi, who also emerged the winner in the ladies’ longest drive, had all smiles, saying she enjoyed the game.

“I think I played well on all the holes except for the last hole. But otherwise I had a lot of fun,” Mbilizi said.

Beatrice Mangwana collected 24 points to occupy third position while Hariet Mariani finished second with 26 points.

For finishing second, Mariani will spend a night for two full-board at Game Haven in Bvumbwe, Thyolo District and Mangwana has been offered a family meal once a week for three weeks at Steers.

Total Malawi Commercial Manager, Mc Chancy Mkamanga, said his company organised the tournament to socialise with their customers for their continued support in buying the company’s products that include fuel, lubricants and solar energy products.

“We are overwhelmed with the maximum number of participants. Most of the golfers, apart from the people working for Illovo, travelled all the way from town [Blantyre] to Nchalo, and this just shows the level of commitment to the tournament and Total as well. We look forward to the next tournament to be held in August this year in Dwangwa,” Mkamanga said.
