Griffin Saenda misses Tigresses clash

Rainbow Paints Southern Region Netball League defending champions, Diamonds, will be without their seasoned coach Griffin Saenda when the team takes on hot title contenders Complex Tigresses at Blantyre Youth Centre this afternoon.

Saenda, who is also the Southern Region Sports Officer, misses out the clash because of official duties as he is currently attending the army sports festival in Salima.

The coach said he was bitter to miss out the clash as it would have given him an opportunity to analyse their counterparts’ format this season.

“It is important to watch your opponents to prepare well ahead of the return match. However, as it is, I will not be available because I have been assigned other duties,” he said.

However, Saenda was confident that his assistant, Noel Mussa, would deliver positive results.

“Last time during a league game, I also missed at the eleventh hour because of a funeral in the location. So I have advised the team what to do and we will be talking on the phone throughout the match to suggest things that they must do if the game gets tough,” he said.

Diamonds have been relying on national team defenders Carol Mtukule-Ngwira, Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda, centre Bridget Kumwenda, shooters Jessica Mazengera-Sanudi and Grace Chazungulira.

Tigresses’ assistant coach, Charles Mhango, said they would like to cement their lead in their quest to reclaim the league championship.

Both teams have 12 points each.

“We have had good preparations and we want to do well. We have to collect maximum points in the first round to avoid the pressure that comes in the second round,” he said.

Tigresses have an equally exciting side revolving around the likes of goal defender Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango, all-rounder Lauren Ngwira, centre Lucy Akidu- Fiwa, goal attacker Ellen Chibokho and goal-shooter Sindie Simtowe.

Gerald Tasaukadala will face Antonio while Thunder Queens will take on Chilomoni Sisters.

Gerald Tasaukadala will complete their assignments on the day when they meet Shizaella Queens.

Alliance Capital Stars will entertain last season’s most improved side, Prison Sisters.

Action will continue tomorrow, with Chilomoni Sisters dating Antonio Queens while champions Diamonds will face Shizaella Queens.

Complex Tigresses will then take on Prison Sisters while Alliance Capital Stars will date Thunders in the match of the day.
