Grittah’s glitters with more gigs

After hosting 2014 Sunbird Search for a Star winner Adrian Kwelepeta’s Live or Die Story album launch and former BBA housemate CO Sangala recently, Grittah’s Camp in Lilongwe has lined up more shows.

Last weekend, the venue hosted Krazy Colours —an all-girl rock band from Chilinde Township. Youthful group Mbanaye is expected to launch their Odi EP on August 25.

Located at CCDC in Chilinde, Grittah’s Camp was idle for 10 years until it was re-opened last September. The place now hosts live music events weekly.

Grittah’s Camp proprietor Neil Nayar said Malawi has many good artists in jazz, acoustic music and rock, hence the need for a venue to promote such kind of music.

“In my experience of traveling in southern Africa, Malawi is actually quite good when it comes to jazz and acoustic music, rock as well. Since there are so many artists who play this music well, why is it seldom heard on the radio?” Nayar quarried.

He added, “At Grittah’s, we love all kinds of music, the point is that without a stage and a platform, the music scene won’t grow. That’s why we have Grittah’s—to push things forward.

“A current rebranding, so people should think of it as a ‘Music & Arts Venue’ rather than a bar, means it’ll be looking even more gorgeous for the launches.”

He said the place is a music and art space where street art and paintings cover the walls, hence it is located far from bottlestores.

“The response so far has been great and I just want to thank everyone for coming to support the shows. We are promoting a lot of artists from the local area and need your continued presence at the gigs. Feel free to suggest any artists you wanna see performing at Grittah’s,” he appealed.

So far, Grittah’s Camp has hosted many artists including Nyasa Music Award winner Malala, Sir Paul Banda, Kwelepeta, George Kalukusha, JJ Munthali and Dan Sibale, Sally Nyundo, Martse, 3rd Eye, Deo, Kaka, Blasto, Sagonjah, Moto Buu, Groovers, Old is Good, Daughters Band and Madalitso Band.
