Grudge match for Blue Eagles, Wanderers

Alex Ngwira

The battle for top two-finish in the TNM Super League will get hot Saturday afternoon when Blue Eagles hosts Mighty Mukuru Wanderers at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe.

It is a must win game for both teams if they are to finish second.

Currently, winning the league for both teams is out of the question and it is like building castles in the air as runaway leaders Nyasa Big Bullets are steadily closing in on the championship.

Fourth-placed Wanderers need to win to leapfrog second-placed Eagles.

Wanderers are fourth on the log table with 50 points from 25 games but have a good goal difference of 28 whereas Eagles are second with 53 points from 26 games. The police side has an inferior goal difference of 22.

Wanderers Coach Alex Ngwira said they need to win at all cost if they are to finish second.

“Eagles are very tough to play against and to beat them. They have a strong defence, having conceded the least at home. We shared points in Blantyre and we are aware it is going to be a tough match. Nevertheless, we will play to win,” he said.

Striker Muhammad Sulumba will carry Nomads’ hopes, having been scoring consistently in recent games.

Sulumba is currently the second top goal scorer with 15 goals, one behind leading scorer Babatunde Adepoju [Bullets].

The likes of Yamikani Chester, Vincent Nyangulu, Wisdom Mpinganjira and Isaac Kaliati are other potential match winners for the Nomads.

Meanwhile, Eagles Coach Eliya Kananji was philosophical ahead of the match, saying the game had come at the right time when both teams were at their peak.

“We are not going into this match as favourites, having beaten Dedza Dynamos 4-0 because our friends also beat Karonga 3-2 in away match, meaning they are also a good side. We will try to get a result from this match and continue with our good form and see what happens next because we are still fighting for the title,” he said.

Kananji has a lot of talented players including captain Schumacher Kuwali, Micium Mhone and Gaddie Chirwa.

In another match slated for Saturday, Civil Service United will date Ekwendeni Hammers at Champion Stadium in Mponela.

TNM Super League action will continue Sunday with Mafco welcoming Bullets at Dedza Stadium.

Bullets, who are leading with 61 points from 25 games, only need to win two games from their last five matches to seal the title.

On the other hand, sixth-placed Mafco, who have 43 points from 27 games also need to consolidate their place in the top eight to be eligible for top-eight cup.

In other matches slated for tomorrow, Karonga United will host Red Lions at Karonga Stadium whereas Moyale Barracks will entertain TN Stars at Mzuzu Stadium.

Kamuzu Barracks will date Silver Strikers at Kasungu Stadium.
