Gulewamkulu banned from schools, churches

Chewa King Kalonga Gawa Undi has issued a decree banning all gulewamkulu activities from educational institutions and places of worship.

Coordinator of the Chewas, Senior Chief Lukwa of Kasungu District, said Gawa Undi has made the declaration after noting that the traditional dance is being abused to disturb classes and religious activities.

“Our King is encouraging us to send our children to school. He also wants us to be God-fearing. Gulewamkulu should never be used to intimidate anyone,” Lukwa said.

He explained that it was Gawa Undi’s wish to see gulewamkulu contributing positively to development in Mozambique, Zambia and Malawi where Chewas are found in large numbers.

Lukwa stated that the King is against tendencies by some people in the three countries who terrorise school and church goers.

“He is asking all Chewas to control their gulewamkulu. He is not amused with reports that gulewamkulu wanders about begging from people and indulging in certain despicable acts. This must stop,” Lukwa cautioned.

He said Gawa Undi has also decreed that children should complete their education first before being inducted into the cult.

Lukwa said the King wants all Chewas to be well educated so that they can positively contribute to their countries’ development.
