Gustave Kaliwo says no rift with Lazarus Chakwera
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General, Gustave Kaliwo, has said his relationship with his party President, Lazarus Chakwera, remains normal.
Recently, MCP made headlines with internal wrangles which prompted Kaliwo to write Chakwera to work on making the party stronger so that it can stand on its feet and respond to the concerns of Malawians.
“Everything is okay. The letter although it was in the public domain, it was between the two of us. It was just an internal communication between the secretary and party president. There is nothing that has been communicated to me [to the] contrary,” he said in an interview on Monday.
In the letter, Kaliwo wanted Chakwera to act upon some issues including calls by some quarters to have an emergency convention to ratify the changes made in the party.
Chakwera advised him to present the issues before the party’s National Executive Committee.
Kaliwo, however, refused to give more details on what is being done to resolve the issues he raised.
“I wrote in [my] capacity as a Secretary General, so we will meet and discuss. But those are internal issues which will be handled internally,” he said.
