GWAMBA —I won’t be part of the awards as an artist

The country’s South Africa-based musician Gwamba will in November this year introduce what he dubs Malawi Hip Hop Awards.

He said Tuesday that he was hopeful that by November, the situation as regards Covid-19 will have been normalised.

“The aim of the awards is to promote and motivate young talent and also to honour Malawian hip hop and making it more interesting. The plan is for the awards to be an annual event,” Gwamba said.

The ‘Better’ star said the awards will have 13 categories including Male Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Collabo of the Year, Hustler of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Gospel Hip Hop of the Year, Verse of the Year, Producer of the Year, Producer of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award and Rookie of the Year.

“There will be a certain amount of money for each and every category and people will have a chance to vote for artists, who they think deserve to win,” he said.

Gwamba said that there will be judges, who will be selected carefully.

The award winning musician, who recently postponed the launch of his album Mama Said God First due to Covid-19 pandemic, said as an artist, he will not be part of the awards and that he will not be involved in the process.

“I will have no say at all and I won’t be part of the awards as an artist,” he said.

The country does not have enough awards on the ground which can motivate artists as well as reward them for their sweat.

“We need awards to motivate artists and thank them for the good work they are doing. These awards will be transparent,” Gwamba said.
