In an interview with The Daily Times Tuesday, family spokesperson, King Rudi, said the family has now agreed that the remains of the 82 year-old Chakuamba be buried at his home at Chinyanje, Traditional Authority Mlolo in the district.
“We will get the body from College of Medicine on Wednesday 26th October at 12 noon to Comesa Hall where the late Honourable Gwanda Chakuamba will lay in state for the general public to view up to Thursday noon. At noon on Thursday the remains will be taken to his home Chinyanje in Nsanje,” he said.
Yesterday morning, friends and family members including notable figures like former cabinet minister, Bazuka Mhango, were gathered at Wanda’s residence in Nyambadwe where a vigil is taking place.
The family has since hailed Chakuamba for his passion for humankind, agriculture and education saying he was a complete person in all he endeavoured to do.
According to Rudi, Chakuamba spearheaded the introduction of irrigation schemes in the Lower Shire Valley and also assisted a number of needy people by paying for their school fees as well as constructing hostels at Chikwawa and Nsanje Secondary Schools.
Meanwhile, President Peter Mutharika has directed that Chakuamba be buried with full military honours. In a statement issued on Monday, Mutharika described Chakuamba as a selfless Malawian nationalist.
