Sponsors of this year’s National Basketball Championship, GY Import and Export, have promised to send the eventual champion to Tanzania on a fully-funded trip for friendly games.
Speaking during the presentation of a K1.5 million dummy cheque to Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) in Lilongwe Wednesday, the company’s managing director, Griffin Kaluwa, said the sponsorship was aimed at reviving basketball.
Kaluwa noted that the game was once popular in Malawi, but needs support to reclaim its high profile.
He said the company was proud to be associated with the game, hence did not hesitate to support it when approached by Basmal.
“Sponsoring basketball is part of our corporate social responsibility and we are proud to be contributing towards keeping our youth busy,’’ Kaluwa observed.
Basmal general secretary, Edgar Ng’ong’ola, pledged to organise a top- class tournament as a way thanking the sponsor.
He disclosed that the tournament will, once again, pool the country’s best teams and players who will showcase their skills in battling for the Tanzania trip.
‘’Nowadays, sponsors are not easy to come by. So we will do all we can to put up a great show of basketball to please our sponsor. Everything is in place for the tournament,’’ Ng’ong’ola emphasised.
Eight teams are expected to participate in the two-day tournament at the ABC Gymnasium in Lilongwe starting from tomorrow to Saturday.
The North has Nkhulande and Moyale Barracks while Cougars, Mimbulu and ABC Lions are representing the Centre. From the Southern Region, the tournament has Bricks, Magang’a and Crazy Warriors.
Additionally, the winner will walk away with K750,000, medals, a trophy and a ball.
The runner-up will get K250,000, medals and a ball, whereas the third-placed team will get medals and a ball.
Ng’ong’ola said games would be played on a double-knockout basis, with the first game throwing off at noon on Friday and the final scheduled for Saturday from 4:30 pm.
