Halmiton Zungu, Joshbed Mpanga win National Bank of Malawi tourney
New golfer Halmiton Zungu and Joshbed Mpanga had a good Mothers’ Day toast when they won the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Golf Tournament at Mulanje Golf Club on Sunday.
Playing off handicap 21, Zungu, a South African national who started playing golf mid last year, scored 67 points to beat 68 other golfers and claim the men’s title whereas Lilongwe-based Mpanga was the victor in the women’s category.
It was a double celebration for Mpanga as, apart from celebrating Mothers’ Day on Sunday, she was also celebrating her husband’s birthday.
On second position in the men’s category was Dr G Araujo, playing off handicap 12, with 68 points whereas Nyakhokho Nsona, playing off handicap 16, was on third position with 69 points after being counted in at 36 points.
In the ladies’ category, Mpanga, playing off handicap 28, won the accolade with 78 points and was followed by Bose Mvula, playing off handicap 28, with 77 points.
There was also a special prize for Mulanje-based golfers and the winner was Dermont Allen, playing off handicap 24, with 73 points.
Zungu hailed NBM for sponsoring the tournament.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for me and my family as, apart from playing golf, we have been able to see beautiful places such as Mulanje,” said Zungu, an engineer working for Illovo Malawi.
Lilongwe-based Mpanga dedicated the win to her husband.
NBM General Manager and Head of Wholesale Banking, Harold Jiya, said the bank was impressed with the turnout in the tournament.
“We thought of sponsoring this golf tournament here at Mulanje Golf Club as one way of supporting our clients and also meeting them in a more relaxed atmosphere so that we can inform them of our products and get feedback from them,” said jiya before presenting a K200,000 cheque to the club for the maintenance of the golf course.
