Handball regional tourneys Saturday
BY MPHATSO MALIDADI:
Presidential Initiative for Sports regional handball tournaments will take place on Saturday, Malawi Handball Association (Maha) General Secretary, Dennis Kumwenda, has confirmed.
In the Southern Region, the tournament will take place at Central High School in Blantyre whereas Domasi College of Education will host Eastern Region games.
In the Central Region, the tournament with take place at Don Bosco Sports Complex with Katoto Secondary hosting Northern Region games.
Kumwenda said the government is sponsoring the tournaments, through the Malawi National Council of Sports, to the tune of K1 million.
Kumwenda said the tournaments will help the association to identify under-20 and 18 female players to represent Malawi at the International Handball Federation (IHF) Zone VI Tournament to take place either in eSwatini (Swaziland) or Botswana next year.
The 2018 edition of the tournament, which took place in Zambia, was for male players only.
“IHF has introduced an annual zonal tournament for Zone VI countries for under- 20 and 18 male and female teams,” he said.
Kumwenda said they will not give cash prizes to winners of the regional tournaments.
“Since handballs are a challenge to most schools, we feel that this is a viable option. Even the money is not enough for cash prizes; hence, using it in a more meaningful way. Given enough support, Malawi can make a name through handball as witnessed at the IHF 2018 tournament where Malawi’s males’ teams finished on position three and four respectively,” he said.
Malawi did not receive the bronze in Zambia because the team’s players failed to produce passports, having gone there using travel documents, which was contrary to the IHF rules.
