Handball squads return after Zambia struggles

By Mphatso Malidadi:

Malawi under-17 and 19 ladies’ handball national teams arrived home on Monday after struggling at this year’s International Handball Federation ladies trophy at Olympic Youth Centre in Lusaka, Zambia.

The under-17 side finished on position six out of 10 teams whereas the under-19 side ended on position eight out of nine countries.

Initially, 12 countries were scheduled to participate in the event but two failed to show up.

Malawi Handball Association Treasurer, Sophie Kathewera, who was the leader of delegation, said they were not disappointed with their showing.

“Of course, losing hurts but we featured youthful teams that can participate in the same under-17 or under-19 for some years.

“This gives us an advantage when we participate in another tournament next year because we will feature the same squad. There were also reports that most teams used overaged players but this is not an excuse,” she said.

Malawi National Council of Sports injected K5 million into the trip while Kips donated water to the squad.
