Handball team eyes Africa challenge
Malawi national handball team has been invited to this year’s International Handball Federation (IHF) Africa Challenge Trophy in South Africa.
The tournament will take place from July 23 to 29, featuring male and female teams from all African countries.
Malawi will b e represented by Under-20 teams in both categories.
According to Malawi Handball Federation general secretary, Dennis Kumwenda, the association has started preparations for the tournament.
“As an association, we have requested all the regional committees to organise tournaments to identify best athletes. Thereafter, we shall hold a national championship to choose the national team to represent Malawi in South Africa,” Kumwenda explained.
The national team is expected to start full-time camp training in July.
Kumwenda disclosed that Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has set aside K1million to assist the association in the preparations.
IHF will provide transport, food and accommodation for the participating nations.
Kumwenda, however, appealed to the corporate world to help the association.
In the previous edition held in Lusaka, Zambia in 2014, Malawi team finished on position four and five in male and female categories respectively.
