Hannock Phiri to defend title against South Africa-based Dennis Mwale

South Africa-based boxer Dennis Mwale has been granted his wish to face national light welterweight champion Hannock Phiri in a 12-round title fight at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) Sports Complex on April 28.
Mwale, who recently challenged Phiri, said he is excited with the development to vie for a local belt.
“This is every big opportunity for me. I want this belt so that when I retire from boxing I should be able to say that I was a Malawian champion. This will be my first belt to hold. I am 100 percent sure that I will take this belt,” he said.
Mwale, 31, has fought 14 times, winning nine fights and losing five.
However, Phiri welcomed Mwale’s challenge, saying he would use the fight to prove his prowess.
“It is always good to be challenged. This belt is mine. I fought for it and will jealously guard this belt,” he said.
Phiri, 24, has six wins, two defeats and a draw on his record.
Kuhes Sports Complex Sports Administrator Geoffrey Biya said they will promote the fight as one of the institution’s initiatives to support the sport.
“We want to have a colourful event. In the meantime we are working on the bill and it will feature female fights as well,” he said.
