Heavy rains damage Lakeshore Road
The M5 Salima-Nkhotakota Road has been rendered impassable following a downpour on Friday which cut off the road at Lingadzi Bridge, some 30 kilometres from Kaphatenga Trading Centre.
Roads Authority Public Relations Officer, Portia Kajanga, on Saturday confirmed the development and said works to rehabilitate the bridge were expected to commence Sunday.
“We are placing pipes so that we have a reliable bridge on the site. We are currently collecting the pipes from different areas. Meanwhile, there is another secondary road from Chikhwawa Trading Centre. We will commence rehabilitations on the affected part by tomorrow [yesterday],” she said.
She said the road faces closure every year, as it is too old, adding that it needs to be reconstructed.
Kajanga said plans are underway to rehabilitate the road which, in most cases, is closed due to damage caused by rains. But the commencement of the project will depend on the availability of resources.
“We need quite a lot of money. We have submitted the new designs. We are waiting to share with our colleagues, the Ministry of Finance, to find different partners to fund the road,” she said.
