Heavy rains destroy property in Lilongwe

Heavy rains injured some people and destroyed property in Lilongwe yesterday, police have confirmed.
Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Joseph Kachikho, last evening said they were still establishing more details about the accidents.
The rains lasted close to five hours.
“We have received reports that some people have died and others have been injured following the heavy rains. We are yet to establish the actual numbers of the injured people,” Kachikho said.
The Daily Times crew visited some parts of the city and saws billboards torn apart and fleet of cars submerged especially at a garage in Biwi Township and Corporate Mall in Lilongwe as the rains continued.
On December 31 2019, heavy rains destroyed 100 houses and three bridges in some areas of Lilongwe, leaving people homeless.
Recently, a 25-year-old man in Dowa District died after being swept away by a flooded river.
Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has since warned of continued heavy rains across the country.
