Heavy rains wash away rail
Heavy rains have destroyed a section of the railway from Nkaya to Mchinji making it impassable for cargo train.
Central East African Railways (Cear) Communications and Corporate Image Manager, Chisomo Mwamadi, confirmed the development saying the company is doing all it can to repair the rail as soon as possible.
“This is our first major wash away of the rail line this rain season. Our engineers are working around the clock to make sure we are back in business as you know this line is used to transport cargo from Nkaya to Kanengo up to Mchinji,” Mwamadi sad.
Mwamadi blamed people for encroaching along the rail line which renders the rail line unprotected.
“Encroachment along the rail is high, so there is a lot of siltation. We have tried before to reason with the people to conserve natural resources, but they are not helping. We, therefore, continue to urge chiefs to support us in this cause of preserving natural resources for the betterment of our operations,” he appealed.
In 2015, Cear had a bad experience when it had to suspend its operations after heavy rains that hit Malawi washed away some of its rail lines.
